Job Description

Position Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist will provide hope, encouragement, and guidance to individuals navigating recovery from substance abuse and mental health challenges within the Louisiana State Opioid Response (LaSOR) Program. Drawing on their own lived experience and specialized training, the Peer Support Specialist will facilitate individual and group support sessions, promote self-advocacy, and assist clients in building connections to community resources. This role plays a crucial part in fostering an empathetic, client-centered environment that empowers individuals to pursue long-term recovery and wellness, which is a key component to recovery.

Responsibilities:
  • Establish trusting, collaborative relationships with clients by providing peer-based support, empathy, and validation.
  • Conduct individual and group peer support sessions, drawing from personal experience and recovery strategies.
  • Act as a role model and advocate for recovery, sharing lived experience when appropriate to instill hope and resilience.
  • Assist clients in setting recovery goals, developing self-management skills, and building a personalized support network.
  • Facilitate connections to community resources, including housing, employment, education, and other support services.
  • Work closely with the clinical team to monitor client progress, participate in case reviews, and update individualized recovery plans.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client interactions and progress notes in accordance with organizational policies and confidentiality regulations.
  • Participate in regular training, supervision, and continuing education opportunities to maintain licensing and expand expertise.


Qualifications:

  • Licensure: Licensed Peer Support Specialist (or equivalent peer support certification).
  • Experience: Lived experience with substance use or mental health recovery, with a demonstrated period of stable recovery.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in social work, counseling, psychology, or related fields is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication, empathy, active listening, and conflict resolution skills. Familiarity with peer support models and recovery principles.
  • Technology: Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar software and ability to use client management systems for documentation.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check as required by organizational policy.
